How long does it normally take to get an appointment?

More than likely you’ll be seen on the same day, but definitely within 48 hours.

Do I need a referral?

You don’t need a referral, you can go directly to the physio whether private or ACC funded, you can fill out ACC forms at the clinic, or if you have a referral from a doctor or hospital you can bring this in with you.

How long are appointments?

Initial appointments are 45-60 minutes, follow up appointments are 30-60 minutes.

What should I wear?

Ideally, wear loose, comfortable clothing. Gowns and shorts are available if required.

What can I expect on my first appointment?

Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to fill out registration and, if applicable, ACC claim forms. A thorough assessment will be undertaken. This will involve the physiotherapist asking a number of questions about your problem, and fully examining the area in question. The physiotherapist will aim to provide a diagnosis, a treatment plan will be discussed, as well as goals and likely duration of treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on many factors, and all patients are individuals. Following your assessment, the physiotherapist will discuss the anticipated number of treatments. You will be assessed on each visit and if progress plateaus or no improvement is seen, then this will be discussed and your treatment altered accordingly. If necessary, referral to a specialist can be arranged.

What if I need an x-ray or ultrasound?

Your physiotherapist can refer you for these tests if it is required.

Why do I have to pay a surcharge if I have an ACC accepted claim?

In 2009 the government reduced funding for physiotherapy in New Zealand. This resulted in physiotherapy practices, almost universally, to pass on the costs in the form of a part payment.

Will there be any other costs?

There will be a small charge for materials used, for example strapping tape.
